PROJECT OVERVIEW
AltiGeo was appointed to complete a topographical survey, measured building survey, drone survey, and Scan-to-BIM package for Greenhill Nursing Home in Carrick-on-Suir.
Survey Method
Greenhill Nursing Home was fully occupied at the time of survey, which required a more strategic and sensitive approach. The survey works had to be carefully planned around residents, staff movement, privacy requirements, and the day-to-day operation of the nursing home.
Each wing of the building was surveyed in a controlled sequence to minimise disruption. Before entering any resident room, an attendant first checked that the resident was comfortable for the survey team to enter. This ensured that resident privacy, dignity, and comfort were maintained throughout the survey process.
LiDAR Scanning
Internal scanning was carried out using a Leica BLK360, while external laser scanning was completed using a Leica RTC360. Black-and-white survey targets were used for registration and geolocation of the setups.
Moving a scanner through an occupied nursing home required careful coordination. Corridors, bedrooms, lounges, treatment rooms, and circulation areas had to be scanned while avoiding disruption to residents, visitors, carers, and nursing staff.
The survey programme was carefully coordinated around the daily routine of the nursing home to minimise disruption to residents and staff. Common areas, including the canteen and recreational spaces, were scanned between 7am–9am and 2pm–4pm, when these areas were generally quieter and many residents were resting in their rooms.
Corridor and bedroom scans were carried out during breakfast and lunch periods, when movement through the circulation areas was reduced. This allowed the survey team to work safely and efficiently while maintaining privacy, comfort, and minimal disturbance within the occupied nursing home environment.
To improve visibility and safety, the scanner tripod was covered with a high-visibility vest so that residents and passers-by could clearly see the equipment and avoid accidental contact.
All scan data was registered and processed in Leica Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS.
Drone Survey
A drone survey was also undertaken to capture roof areas, upper-level elements, and external site context that could not be fully recorded using terrestrial LiDAR alone. The drone imagery was processed into a geolocated photogrammetric pointcloud and combined with the LiDAR and topographical survey data.
CAD & BIM Production
The coordinated survey dataset was used by AltiGeo’s CAD and BIM team to produce accurate 2D CAD drawings and a BIM model of the existing nursing home.
